The kitchen is the heart of any foodservice business. Like a human heart, its job is to pump and circulate life-giving blood throughout the rest of the operation. Therefore, kitchen placement will affect the quality of the food, the number of guests who can dine at any particular time of day, the roles and workload of the servers as well as kitchen employees, utility costs, and even the atmosphere of the dining area. Remember, each of these elements also figures in the overall profitability of the business.

A poorly designed kitchen can make food preparation and service more difficult than it should be, and it can even undermine staff morale. So, if a new restaurateur has little cash to spend on professional designers, that cash is probably best spent planning the location and design of the kitchen-the one area where equipment, ventilation, plumbing, and general construction costs combine for a major investment.

c. Intelligent design to minimize injury risks. Most people have to do some reaching, twisting, lifting, and bending to perform their jobs, but if these motions are repetitive or excessive, they become unnecessarily strenuous and can prompt injuries, from back problems to carpal tunnel syndrome. For instance, most culinary tasks require the use of some type of surface space. It must be the correct height for the task, and located within easy reach of the employees who will use it. Putting heavier equipment on rolling carts or ordering it with casters also prevents back injuries.

d. Properly designed equipment, in good working condition. Sharp knives and red-hot range tops and motorized equipment are part of any kitchen, but they need not invite disaster. Look for safety features as you purchase. On heated equipment, for instance, check the amount of insulation and order insulated handles and doorlocking safety mechanisms.

e. Comfortable temperatures and humidity control. Many restaurant owners are concerned about making their guests comfortable-but what about the employees who spend entire workdays there? The ideal balance of fresh air, humidity, and air movement is a technical topic best left to ventilation experts. What we have noticed is that many commercial kitchens pay attention to grease control because it is part of their fire code requirements, but, overall, the kitchen space is not properly air-conditioned.

f. Adequate lighting for the required tasks. For kitchens, adequate lighting includes attention to glare and shadows as well as light levels. Fatigue sets in and errors multiply when lighting is insufficient; and good lighting also is necessary to monitor the sanitation of food, surfaces, and utensils.

g. Noise control and abatement.Kitchens can be noisy places, from chefs barking orders to the whirring of appliances and the clatter of dish rooms. It is no longer sufficient just to keep the din from the kitchen from spilling into the dining area. We can also learn to plan wisely by thinking of the restaurant kitchen as a manufacturing plant: With a combination of labor and raw materials, it turns out product. The unique aspect of foodservice is that this finished product is sold in an outlet that is attached to the factory.

Like any other type of manufacturing plant, productivity is highest when the assembly lines and machinery are arranged in a logical, sequential order to put the components together. In foodservice, this includes everything from tossing a salad to turning in orders so that no guest is left waiting too long for a meal.

How To Grow Tropical Plants Even If You Don’t Live In The Tropics

Tropical Paradise. We often see commercials of Tropical Vacations and dream of better days sitting under the sun with a drink in our hands. What is it about the tropics we so enduring? What lures us to these places? In colder climates during the winter months plants have acclimated to the climate. They can take freezing temperatures and months of snow and ice. However tropical plants are not capable of surviving these climates. But we still long for that Tropical fruit we buy in the store for outrageous prices. What if we could go over to a tropical tree, select a ripe fruit and eat it right then and there, while outside a blizzard is taking place? Our own tropical paradise, right inside out own home. Many tropical plants will grow with the right care and conditions in areas that normally would not permit them. These same plants that grow in abundance in Asia, South America, Africa, can grow right in your own living room, ready to pluck the ripe, sweet fruit grown specifically by you.

Potting

There are many different types of pots available and each has its benefits and drawbacks. There is plastic with can heat up or freeze quickly, Metal, same as plastic,
Clay and wood dry quicker, ceramic that can be heavy and many others that you can buy at local garden centers. For the most part all can be used quite successfully with tropical plants. Choose one based on your own preferences.

These pots should have holes in the bottom for adequate drainage. When you buy your pot, and before you put in soil, cover these holes with a mesh of some sort to help retain the soil, it is also good to put down an inch or two of gravel to insure good drainage. With tropical plants drainage is essential to healthy plants.

Potting soil from the local garden center will suffice; however a much better solution would be 1 part Perlite or Vermiculite, 1 part course sand, and 1 part Peat. This gives good drainage as well as sufficient nutrients. Make sure your soil is not packed down heavy to allow good drainage but not excessive drainage.

Remove your plant from its original container; look carefully at the root system. It they are heavily packed in and there is more root then dirt, we want to prune these roots before we p

lant. Take some of these roots and loosen them up and then carefully clip the ends to stimulate the plant to root more in its new container. If pruning is not needed, then just loosen the root ball before planting.

Place the plant in the new container making sure you have filled it halve way with the new planting material. You want to make sure that when you fill the rest of the container with soil, the soil line is the same as the original plant when you pulled it out. The soil like should be about 1-4 inches below the rim of the pot when you are all finished.

Important key: Make sure your fully grown plant will be proportional to your pot. Don’t put an 8 foot tall tree in a 10 inch pot. Allow the roots to be able to grow, the larger the pot the more fruit it will bear.
Light

Tropical plants usually require lots of sunlight, anywhere you can place them to receive full sunlight is beneficial to them. Search on the internet for your species to find out their light requirements. Some tropicals do well in partial shade however most need to receive the maximum sunlight available.
Tropical plants, when you receive them are most likely used to full sunlight, when you are going to bring them indoors, or for winter times, when bringing them indoors, you must acclimate them to your indoor area. Make sure to put them near a good light source and if possible add additional light

Water

Tropical plants are used to lots of water, however they are also used to well drained soil, so their water requirements are different for potted plants. These dependencies are based on size of the pot, size of the plant, type of plant, temperature where you keep the plant, the humidity and the type of soil you have. You are usually safe to water, when the upper surface of the soil is dry before you water your plant. Slowly fill the container watching for runoff at the bottom holes. Remember that wood or clay pots dry faster, making watering more frequent, and cooler weather slows down the growth of the plant, thus reducing the need to water as much.

Temperature

This is probably the key ingredient to successful tropical plant keeping. NO FREEZING WEATHER. Tropical plants cannot take cold temperatures, so you will need to find a way to bring these indoors. Cold temperatures will lead to root damage, and leave damage. Again it depends on the species of tropical plant you have to the extent it can take cold weather. Some plants you can just cover overnight and then remove each morning, others will need to be brought indoors. If you bring them indoors make sure you keep them away from drafts from doors or windows to freeze, and out of the heating vent areas so not to dry out too fast.
Fertilizer

Too much fertilizer is very bad for tropical plants. The best type of fertilizer to use are water soluble types, any local garden center can help you pick out a good fertilizer that will meet the plants requirements. Read the directions completely. After spending good money on a beautiful tropical plant, you would hate to kill it by over fertilizing it. Usually with a tropical plant the mature foliage will show deep green indicating that you are fertilizing on the correct scale. Make sure your fertilizer has a complete balanced diet of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Lesser amounts of Magnesium, Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, again Read the label.

Pruning
With most container tropical plants little or no pruning is needed. However if the plant becomes “leggy” due to poor light conditions then cut it back greatly to force it to bush out. If the top becomes too large for the root structure, again a large pruning spree is needed. Also when you start to get leaf shed and twig die back this is an indication that the root structure is not large enough for the top foliage and pruning is needed.
Fruitfulness

Will I get fruit? This is the question we all ask. Is it worth the time and effort? Ask anyone that has a

fruit tree planted in a pot, as they pick tropical fruit on a blizzard day of 10 below zero, and they will always tell you “Yes!” For the most part container tropic plants are dependant on the light source and size of the pot to how much fruit they will have. Most fruit trees will fruit in pots as long as we keep all of the requirements alive in our head. The larger the tree the larger the pot that is needed. Fruit will bear proportional to the size of the pot and plant. Please keep in mind that some fruit will need a presence of another cultivator to be able to fruit. Again check the specifics of your plant before you decide to buy it.

On a recent Sunday, the Philadelphia Inquirer shocked our local community by stating the obvious: “Even after the carnage at an Amish school in Lancaster County last week, a spot check by Inquirer reporters found a surprising number of security lapses at schools across the region. In spite of rules aimed at limiting public access, reporters who fanned out on a single day walked into more than a dozen schools unannounced and without being challenged.” Schools Caught Short on Security, The Philadelphia Inquirer, October 8, 2006

Many people think that security is the security manager’s issue. However, on a recent blog post, I stated: “You can’t rely on your employees and consultants to use common sense when it comes to your company’s security. Remember to continually communicate the boundaries of permission to remind everyone that safety and security are team issues.”

In the case of the school security breaches, well-meaning teachers and students, as well as hapless employees and contractors, provided unauthorized and unsupervised access. Luckily, the intruders were reporters; there were no casualties other than reputations and peace of mind.

In order to understand why this security lapse is particularly astonishing at this time, here is the background for those who don’t live in Pennsylvania and may not know: A gunman had recently invaded a one room Amish schoolhouse, killing 5, severely injuring 5, and traumatizing the whole community. Subsequently, the often repeated message has been, if this can happen at that one room schoolhouse in the middle of the countryside in a peace-loving community, it can happen anywhere. We should step up efforts to keep our kids safe because of the high likelihood of copycat crimes.

These security lapses occurred at a time of heightened security. If a murderer had come sneaking in the side door, the consequences would have been very deadly. While most of us don’t have to worry quite this much about our policies and procedures, it made me stop and think.

There were policies in place at all of the schools. Some of the policies were better than others, but each had security policies. When questioned, school authorities stated that there were policies that were not followed. For some reason, it seemed as though some felt that this settled everything, though I was left with many questions:

* Are the procedures written in light of actual practices/are they practical?

* Who is responsible for verifying that policies and procedures are followed?

* How is accountability ensured?

* What is the personal consequence of causing a security breach?

* How are the policies and procedures communicated, and how can we be sure that the involved parties understand them?

* What are you doing to make sure that these kids are safe, both now and in the future?

* How are updates communicated?

You can use these questions to consider the effectiveness of the security policies and procedures for your business as well. (There are many kinds of policies and procedures; this discussion focuses on security.) Many people view policies and procedures as an unpleasant set of paperwork that is at times needed for regulatory or legal reasons. However, policies and procedures should be meaningful roadmaps to better business practices.

In the case of security, the documents are “organic”. The procedures will change with advances in technology, or changes in criminal behavior. Policies and procedures are purposeful; when it comes to security, following policies and procedures should prevent or limit loss. However, misunderstandings can instead cause confusion and create risk.

The good news: There are many things that you can do to create a framework for success and thwart would-be crimes; put your documentation to work! You can use the following suggestions to ensure that your policies and procedures aren’t just sitting in a drawer collecting dust.

If you don’t have policies and procedures in place, begin with your most pressing concerns. You can update documents later as needed, but it’s important to gain and keep momentum or the project will stall. Once the writing begins, you will immediately find gaps and broken processes that need to be addressed. If a manager is doing the writing, he or she is likely to have starts and stops as attention is given to management issues. This can be frustrating.

Many managers enjoy outsourcing the work to a writer so that they can fix processes quickly without affecting the project schedule. Most technical writers offer free estimates and are happy to discuss your project with you. You may also request quotes from more than one company to comparison shop.

Create a communication plan. For instance, send out a section per week for review instead of one overwhelmingly large document, and meet later in the week to discuss that section.

Make information relevant. The best way to do this is for the manager to write a follow-up note or lead a discussion regarding the manager’s specific concerns with the team. For example, “Procedure 3.1 states that company laptops must be secure, but it doesn’t elaborate. As part of the sales force, your laptop travels with you and security is really essential here. These are the types of things that I feel are necessary to improve physical security, as well as data security…” In this way, the employees are relating the procedures to their own personal experiences and situations.

Cover all your bases. Make sure that there is a system in place to thoroughly disseminate the information. In this case, schools needed to communicate with teachers, other employees, students, parents, and contractors. When you need to educate a broad audience, you must have a plan. Don’t assume that people will pick up the information by osmosis.

Reinforce the information. Using training classes, online quizzes, and class discussions reinforces the concepts and gives people a chance to apply their new knowledge. Providing employees with job aids, such as quick reference cards, will also help them to gain proficiency.

Allow for input. Hold employee roundtable discussions or encourage employees to provide input to the managers. In many respects, employees are your first line of defense against disaster.

Establish accountability. If a person knows that there will be random security checks, he/she will be much more likely to self-check. It’s human nature. Along the same lines, managers who create a compliance audit plan are more likely to follow up than those who do not.

Apply the rules to everyone. I have heard it said that managers who feel that the rules don’t apply to them create the biggest risk to corporate IT security. In fact, the clearance held by top executives means that they are the greatest risk, and they should probably be even more careful (not less).

Be ready to take action. Treat security breaches with speed and commitment. You don’t want to be overly punitive, but you also don’t want to be a haven for scofflaws that aren’t working with the rest of the company to keep everyone safe. More than likely, if you are prepared to follow through with those who are breaking policies, you won’t have to.

Review your business practices at the slowest time in your annual sales cycle. The mere existence of this set of documents does not automatically improve practices. Policies and procedures only work if they are accurate, relevant, and known.

When teams work together, crimes are prevented. Well-written policies and procedures bring unity and understanding, keeping people and possessions safe. When security is breached in spite of the efforts, a well-thought out backup plan will ensure that the problem is resolved as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Far from being a distraction, when written with respect and participation, the development and implementation of policies and procedures has a positive effect on job performance, safety, and productivity.

Dear Dad,

At a recent evening church service the pastor asked three men to give testimony to the influence of their fathers in their lives. All three men gave glowing accounts of the many ways in which their fathers had shaped their lives, of the importance of their father’s example and the many different memories they had of their Christian influence.

But the thing that struck me most was the fact that two of these men expressed regret that they had not fully communicated their appreciation to their fathers. Dad, I do not want to find myself in their shoes some day. The things these men had to say moved me very much. There they were – so appreciative of their Dads, but feeling great remorse that they were unable to tell them.

So, Dad, I write this letter.

You are probably unaware of how frequently I think of you. I suppose a day seldom goes by that I don’t do so. When a problem comes up I want to call you and ask for advice, you are always so helpful and seem to know just what to do. Or I just want your opinion on something. You always bring a fresh perspective to any question. I can even recall that I’ve actually called you all the way from Australia in pursuit of a correct spelling. I could have asked someone else, but you have long known my poor spelling ability. Why would I want anyone else to know – and you never make me feel foolish or inadequate.

But the times I think of you most are when I ask myself, “What would Dad do in this situation?” I try to imagine how you would handle the major and minor challenges that come into my life. I can sometimes hear your advice without even having to ask. I have often thought I cannot go too far wrong if I do what I think you would do in any given situation.

I think back to my early childhood. How I would, with careless abandon, jump off the shed roof into your outstretched arms, with no fear, never once thinking I was taking a risk because I was confident that you would never let me go. What a wonderful picture this is of our heavenly father’s love and care for us. In this childhood experience, you were teaching me even then that God would keep me and never let me go.

Then there were the little adventures we delighted in. Our walks in Penticton to ‘Cowboy Country’ when I was still a child. You were my hero as you stood your ground against wild Indians and desperate outlaws. Pork and beans cooked in the tin over an open fire – never has a gourmet meal tasted so good since.

When a teen, there were walks in the woods with the family as we went on fishing excursions to mountain lakes. Opportunity to talk, share, and laugh, and as always, to learn. You were ever the teacher – drawing from the experience of life – teaching, as Scripture says precept upon precept. The day you swam across the lake as Bryon and I paddled by your side in air mattresses – it seemed then, and still does in my memory, like a marathon event.

I remember with delight how you make everything in life an adventure. You always heightened our anticipation of even the most ordinary events. You wove a story around each, and established routines whereby the whole family could participate in your adventures. Together, with you, we went through your many stages of life-interests: photography, farming, academic studies, Bible teaching, church leadership, boating, fine woodworking, film making – the list goes on.

You taught me how to think on my feet. You would challenge us to suggest any topic and you would speak on it for five minutes. You instilled self-confidence in us, the ability to speak in public, and the desire to do our best at whatever we did. You used to say, “Even if you are digging a ditch we should do so to the very best of our ability and to the honour and glory of God”. You taught us that there was nothing in life that we could not do if we put our mind to it.

Of course, Dad, the one area of my life I owe most to you is your example as a Christian father. You never waver, never compromise, never say one thing and do another. Many have been the times that you have discussed matters of faith with each of us. At your feet, I completed ’seminary’ before I completed high-school, for so often our meal conversation was about faith issues and doctrinal matters. You gave me a hunger for the Word, and a desire to be a student of Scriptures, and perhaps even a lay Bible teacher, just like you. What impresses me most about you is the consistency between what you say and what you do.

Dad, of course you know I have learned all I know about being a father as I have observe you interact with each of us. Your tenderness towards Mom and Anne – the countless ways by which you model sacrificial love. You have never stopped courting Mom, it is your practice to take Anne on dates, and she cannot walk through a room of her home without being reminded by the many things you made for her in your workshop. Your love and care for your Grandchildren – what an important part of your life they are – and you of theirs.

These are practical signs of your love for us. But I am also very much aware that you have spent many hours on your knees with Mom bringing to God your heart-felt concerns for your children and grandchildren. The phrase ‘man of prayer’ is most appropriate to you. Thankyou, Dad.

I know that your commitment to serving God, was, in part, born out of an experience when as a young father you knelt at my hospital bedside and bargained with God to spare my eyesight in exchange for a lifetime of never saying ‘no’ to opportunities of service. And I know you have never once broken your pledge which to you is a sacred trust. You are a living example of the kind of Christian man I want to be.

But I cannot do justice to you without honouring the wonderful example you have been as a husband. Completely devoted to Mom, always showing her how much you love her in so many, many ways. Dad, I doubt that I will ever know a man who after more than fifty-eight years of marriage is so completely and absolutely devoted as you are to Mom. Of course, an equal portion of credit for this belongs to Mom as well.

I still seek your approval. And though I am now a mature adult, your blessing on the things I do has always been, and remains very important to me. Whilst there have been times when I found your black and white view of life maddening, there have never been times where I doubt your love for me or the rest of our family. There have been times when I wish you were less clinical, more emotional, but there have never been times when I felt you did not honour my self-esteem. You have not always agreed with the things I’ve said, or the decisions I’ve made, but you have never criticised the choices I’ve made. You always make sure my self-worth is intact. You treat each member of our family in the same thoughtful and tender way

Dad, you are a man of principle, a man of conviction, and a man of great integrity. Please know that I affirm you as a man, love you as a son and am and will always be thankful to God for you.

I'd like to build one with a concrete foundation. I've roofed, sawed and hammered as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. I've also laid my own tile without major trouble. But I have only the most basic tools.

I've considered just buying a kit, but I'd like a shed with some personality, and I like the idea of creating something from scratch. I've browsed Amazon.com for shed book ideas, and there are plenty. “Barns, Sheds and Outbuildings: Plan, Design, Build” seems thorough. I'll also visit my library before I decide whether to build on my own.

How To Build A Storage Shed Foundation

Before starting your shed foundation, check your local building code to make sure you will have no regulation issues. Check with
your local zoning to make sure if there are any distance requirements from the property line, your house, etc..

Now that you are aware of any regulations, you can determine the location.

When choosing a location pay careful attention to the drainage. Try choosing a location where water will not pool. Sloping the ground will direct water so it will not pool near your shed foundation.

If you will be using a skid foundation, adding crushed gravel about three to four inches thick, and about a foot wider than the shed will also help protect your shed foundation from water and moister.

Unlike a skid foundation, a concrete slab foundation will be permanent, once it is poured it can not be moved. Building a concrete slab foundation starts with leveling the site. Then you will build your forms and position a layer of welded wire mesh to provide reinforcement and help prevent cracking. Next the concrete is cast over it.

If you do not feel comfortable making your own concrete slab foundation, consider hiring a professional.

Although you can build a shed on a concrete slab, the majority of storage sheds are built on skid foundations.

When choosing lumber to build your skid foundation, choose pressure treated lumber to prevent decay. Prepare the area by removing four to six inches of soil about twelve inches wider than the shed, and fill with gravel.

Building the foundation for your shed is not that difficult, but you should take into consideration weather or not you have the skills. Will you have the time, and the tools.

One of the great advantages of doing it yourself is the money you will be saving. By making a shopping list of all the material, you can get a good estimate for the price of this project. You can then compare your estimate to having it done. About half the cost of any project is the labor, by doing it yourself you can even go for a larger shed with the same budget.

Introduction:

This guide is written for those who do need video security and can’t afford costly installation services, or if the CCTV installer is not available in your area – the later is more common than one could think. We will cover most common security equipment types, as it is virtually impossible to go over such a wide rang of different security cameras and recording/video processing equipment available on the market.

I assume anyone considering do-it-yourself CCTV installation has basic knowledge of wiring techniques and practices. I am not to be held responsible or liable for damages to the equipment due to mishandling or misuse. Remember; during the installation always pay attention to safety. Working at heights and using tools can be dangerous, please follow all safety practices. Lets jump right to it now.

Planning: First step of any camera installation is to plan camera and monitoring equipment locations. When planning for camera locations please take in consideration light condition, never install cameras in low light room pointing straight into the sunny area it will add glare to the picture, even if your camera has back light compensation it will not be enough. Use infrared cameras for very dark conditions and/or B/W cameras with as low LUX number as possible. I am not going to discuss proper equipment selection, as this was subject of my last article.

Selecting the best possible camera locations is not easy, and will directly impact the camera views. Besides light conditions, the distance to the monitoring object is equally important. There are many different types and focal lengths of lenses; your selection will depend on light condition and distance from the camera to the monitoring object. In small rooms around 500sq. ft. cameras with standard 3.6mm lens should be OK. Keep in mind that most bullet and board type of cameras come with 3.6mm lens, the greater the distance to the monitoring object the longer focal length of the lens will be needed. There is no ease way of judging lens selection, you can eider guess or buy professional lens selector tool.. Alternatively you can start with your lens selection and if needed get longer or shorter focal length lens later. Other option as far as lens selection goes, is to use variable focus lens, which is very versatile approach and takes the guess out of the lens selection process. For those who do not know what variable focus lens is, it’s basically adjustable focal length lens that will allow to change the focal length within specified range, fore example: 2.6mm – 8mm or 5mm – 50mm.

To maximize cameras coverage and get the most out of the CCTV system for least amount of money minimize number of it by placing cameras in strategic places, unless complete area coverage is needed. Avoid overlapping camera views, do not install them with source of light directly in front of it and do not place infrared cameras pointing at each other to eliminate risk of overexposure. These are the most common mistakes that need to be avoided. After the initial camera locations are predetermined, lets look at cable placement. Make sure that it is actually possible and practical to run cable to each location, if running the cable to any camera location is for some reason impossible opt-out for alternate location.

Wiring: The most time consuming and important part of any camera installation is wiring. Plan your installation carefully to minimize cable lengths and insure good quality video signal. Never run cables alongside high power electrical lines, at least 12″ spacing between video cable and power lines are recommended. Keep the cable lengths below 400ft and use good quality cable, most people take the cable for granted, but it is actually very important aspect of any installation. The CCTV system is only as good as its weakest component. I usually stick with RG59U with power Coleman cable (YES it is US made) sometimes called Siamese type cable. It is combo cable and will transmit video and power, as an alternative it is sometimes possible to use less expensive RG6 standard coax cable with separate run of 18/2AWG for power.

The Siamese cable is less bulky and easer to run, distribution power supply is recommended with this type of cable as power will be supplied from common place right next to monitor and recording equipment. Using Siamese cable makes for more clean and neat installation, as only one line is required for each camera. Running RG6 cable with separate run for power is the likely solution if power outlets are available near each locations. In this case individual plug in power supplies are used to power them with power cable running as separate and independent line to the camera. Both types of cables are available at dvrexperts. When running the cable it is good practice to leave couple of loops of extra cable at both camera and monitoring locations. This extra length of cable is needed if in the future monitoring or location will have to be moved slightly. After the cable is in place, the labor-intensive part of installation is over, now we can get to the fun part of installation.

Camera mounting: Most s come with mounting screws and bracket included, attach the bracket firmly and remember that in some cases different brackets than the ones supplied with the cameras could be needed.

Attach the camera to the bracket and adjust the position approximately at this time, we will come back to it later. Typical security camera is powered by 12VDC or 24VAC and power input type is screw or push terminals or 2.1mm plug. Power connection will differ for each type of power supply and input style. Most cameras are 12VDC, in this case it is important to observe polarity or you may damage the camera. The power cable has two conductors and in most cases it will be red or white and black cable. Use the red or white for positive and black for negative terminals. If it has screw or push terminals power input connect the cable directly observing polarity, if it is 2.1mm plug, a special 2.1MM Female DC Plug with Flying Leads have to be connected to the cable again keep attention to polarity. The 24VAC connection is very similar, with one major difference – polarity is not important.

Next step will involve some special tools and accessories. We will attempt to go over installation process of BNC crimp-on video connector, I will post video demonstration of BNC crimping techniques shortly so please check the web sites mentioned in this article often.

Steps: 1. Remove about 1/2-inch long outer jacket from the end of video cable exposing braid. 2. Slide the crimping barrel onto the cable with the larger diameter facing end of the cable. 3. Pull the braid backwards exposing the inner isolator material and remove 3/8-inch of it so you have now core conductor exposed. 4. The main part of BNC connector has a small hole on one side; push the exposed core conductor of the cable into that hole as far as it will go. 5. Push all the braid folded backwards in step 3 onto the BNC connector and spread the braid evenly around connector. 6. Push the crimping barrel onto the BNC connector all the way. 7. Using crimping tool, squeeze the crimping barrel onto the BNC connector, now the cable braid is compressed in between crimping barrel and BNC connector assuring secure connection.

BNC connector is on, lets hook it up now and repeat the steps for each camera, if you have purchased 16 camera system you may want to get some coffee first.

Monitor and recorder connection:

Cameras are on, its time to make final connections. I will focused on standard CCTV monitor, standalone DVR recorder and distribution power supply, as this is the most popular and likely solution for most CCTV installations.

First we have to install BNC connectors on this side as well – its time for that coffee again. It is good idea to make room for monitor and recorder now and setup some type of desk, shelf or rack to place all the equipment on.

We need the monitor and recorder in place so we can determine proper power supply location. Power supply should be mounted within couple of feet from the DVR video inputs. After power supply is secured separate the power conductors from the Siamese cable, and run it to power supply. Like we did with the cameras if 12VDC power is used, we need to watch the polarity, each terminal on the power supply is marked, so there should not be any doubt. Make sure the power supply is not plugged in to the power outlet yet.

Connect video cables to the DVR video in ports. We need one video cable to connect the DVR with the monitor, if you do not have one you may cut piece of Siamese cable separate the power conductors from it and install BNC connectors on both ends, you now have the cable. Connect the DVR monitor out port to monitor video in. We are almost ready to power up everything; there is only one more thing to take care before we do that.

We need to protect the equipment from power spikes by plugging it into power conditioner or better yet, buttery backup unit. If the installation location is experiencing frequent power outages, the backup unit is strongly recommended. To extend the backup time only plug the DVR and camera power supply to the backup unit and the monitor to regular power strip, this way if we do loose power for some time the DVR and cameras are still functioning as normal while monitor is off. Turning off monitor will not affect DVR and cameras in any way; it is actually good habit to turn the monitor of if not used to extend its life.

Power on and final adjustment: Yes… we are now ready to power it up for the first time, if this is your first installation it may be nerve-racking experience. Start with turning the cameras power supply on, turn the monitor on as well followed by DVR system. The stand-alone DVR, after self-test will show cameras or setup menu on first power up depending on your model.

To setup the DVR refer to the manual for proper settings. Go over each camera view to determine if the view is actually what you want, hardly ever it will be without additional readjustments. To properly and easily adjust the positions, the test monitor will be very handy if not essential tool. Go to each camera location and connect the test monitor to adjust the position to your preferences, if satisfied secure camera bracket adjustment screws – we will not go back to this camera anymore.
